Read Across America Celebrated through the Brockton Public Schools

It's time once again for the celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday and Brockton's participation in the NEA's Read Across America Day.  This year we visit the Goddard School, the Kennedy School, and the Whitman School.  At these schools we observe some of their guest readers like Brockton Rox Manager Ed Nottle and Representative Creedon and see some of the art projects the students worked on including their own "Cat in the Hat" hats.

MainSpring Coalition and the One Family Scholar Program

In their continuing mission the MainSpring Coalition for the Homeless has teamed up with One Family, Inc. to bring the One Family Scholars Program to Brockton.  This marks only the fourth center to participate in the Scholars program and the first south of Boston.  Executive Director of MainSpring Dennis Carmen, Executive Director of the One Family Scholars Program Marjorie Clapprood, and others tell us about the day.  (In addition to this 1NM segment, the entire event was recorded by BCA and aired for the community.)

The Energy Bucks Program and Self Help, Inc.

The winter months have not been kind to the ‘City of Champions’ and heating costs due to heat loss and fuel continue to mount.   To assist with these costs Massachusetts launched its Energy Bucks program last year.  Some local organizations, like Brockton's own Self Help,  have teamed with statewide utility leaders to take a look at conserving energy and saving money.  John Carlson and some of his staff at Self Help tell us how they assist with weatherization and fuel assistance while Steve Hall of Mass Electric tells us about the program and why business's get involved.

American Women In Art with Anne Heywood held at the Brockton Public Library

The Brockton Public Library continues its busy scheduling of workshops, lectures, and events including the invitation of local artist Anne Heywood to celebrate Women's History Month.  1NM talks with Heywood who shares with us several American artists and their contributions.  Discussed are Grandma Moses, Lily Spencer, Georgia O'Keefe, and Dorothy Lange to name a few.

64th Annual Strand Theater Memorial

We join the city in it's 64th annual recognition of the 13 firefighters who gave their ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty fighting the Strand Theatre Fire March 10th, 1941.  (In addition to this 1NM segment, the entire event was recorded by BCA and aired for the community.)
